Beryl is an editor for Ballantine Books. Not much is known about her, though she and Otho seem to have a negative relationship, as shown by Otho's repeated jabs at her, including one where he compares her to the Wicked Witch of the West.
Biography[]
Bernard, Grace, Otho and Beryl attend a dinner hosted by the Deetzes where all of them (except Lydia) are possessed by the Maitlands, who make them dance and sing "Day-O" by Harry Belafonte before frightening them by having six monstrous hands pop out of the table and grab them by their faces and throw them back into their chairs. However, the group quickly overcome their initial shock and express delight at having discovered there is life after death. However, when Lydia informs the rest of them that the Maitlands don't want to come down from the attic as they were trying to scare them away, all of the Deetzes' guests (except Otho) leave.
Personality[]
She is a quiet artistic freak. Otho picks on her for this aspect. She is often seen smoking cigarettes and has nervous, twitchy mannerisms. She appears to be suicidal. Smoking seems to be a relief - at least for a little while.
History[]
Previously unsuccessfully attempted committing suicide, possibly on multiple occasions. Again Otho antagonizes her "dreary suicide attempts", saying "You know what they say about people who commit suicide - in the afterlife, they become civil servants". Ironically, Otho is correct, given the mythology of the Beetlejuice universe.
